This group of western Canadian interior species includes Engelmann spruce, white spruce, hybrid white spruce, lodgepole pine, and subalpine fir. The colouring of this group ranges from white to pale yellow. These grades are light in weight, work easily, take paint well, hold nails well, and exhibit small knots.

Southern Yellow Pine (SYP): This group of trees grows in the southern United States and includes longleaf, shortleaf, loblolly and slash pine. SYP is superior in absorption of preservatives and well over 50% of it is used for treated products such as decking piers, and numerous other construction and decorative applications requiring protection from decay. SYP is characterized by its strength and is commonly used in untreated structural applications such as joists, rafters, roof trusses, and laminated beams.
